In the Brest region, about 22 thousand large families have already received one-time financial assistance to prepare children for school. This was reported by the first deputy chairperson of the committee on labor, employment and social protection of the Brest regional executive committee Elena Fedenko.
On the eve of the new school year, the region provides assistance in preparing children from large, low-income families, and disabled children for school. "About 22 thousand large families raising 41 thousand children have already received one-time financial assistance to prepare children for school. The amount of payments amounted to more than Br5 million," said Elena Fedenko. Financial assistance is provided regardless of the family's income. The amount of payments for each schoolchild is Br129.9 (30% of the average per capita subsistence minimum budget, effective as of August 1, 2024).
In the Brest region, the number of large families has almost doubled over the past ten years. There are currently about 25.4 thousand of them in the region. Of these, 78% are raising three children. About 1.6 thousand families are raising five or more sons and daughters. Most parents with many children live in the Moskovsky District of Brest, in Baranovichi, Pinsk and the Stolin District.
"As part of state targeted social assistance to low-income families raising minor children, support is provided in the form of one-time and monthly social benefits for the purchase of clothing, footwear, and office supplies. The amount of payments is determined by the commissions for the provision of state targeted social assistance of the city and district executive committees, the administrations of the Leninsky and Moskovsky Districts of Brest in each case individually, based on the family's income and specific life situation. Such assistance has already been received by 197 families (646 children) for a total of Br640.5 thousand," explained the first deputy chairman of the committee on labor, employment and social protection.
Parents and their workplaces help their children get ready for school using funds from trade unions or employers. 2.1 thousand families in the Brest region received such financial support for a total of Br480 thousand. Other public and religious organizations do not stand aside either. The region also holds many charity events to collect school supplies, clothes, shoes, and money.
