On April 4, at a meeting of deputies of local Councils of Deputies of the basic level of the Brest region, the election of members of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus of the eighth convocation will take place.
From March 12 to March 21, 2024, joint meetings of the presidiums of local Councils of Deputies of the basic level, the Minsk City Council of Deputies and the relevant executive committees were held. Eight candidates for members of the Council of the Republic were nominated from each region and the city of Minsk.
Thus, candidates from the Brest region were nominated: Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Igor Lutsky, Chairman of the Brest Regional Council of Deputies Igor Brilevich, General Director of RUPP "Granit" Eduard Gavrilkovich, Chief Physician of the Brest Regional Clinical Hospital Alexander Karpitsky, General Director of the Brest Regional Unitary Enterprise "Housing and Communal Services Management" » Alexander Maksimchuk, director of JSC “Zhuravlinoe” of the Pruzhany district Alexander Pishch, director of the Berezovsky district center for correctional and developmental training and rehabilitation Tatyana Ignatyuk, director of the memorial complex “Brest Hero Fortress” Alexander Korkotadze.
The Council of the Republic is one of the two chambers of parliament. It is a chamber of territorial representation and consists of 64 members.
The procedure for forming the Council of the Republic combines elements of election and appointment.
Eight members of the Council of the Republic are elected from each region and the city of Minsk. Eight members are appointed by the President of the Republic of Belarus.
Elections of members of the Council of the Republic are carried out on the basis of indirect suffrage by secret ballot.
Candidates for members of the Council of the Republic registered by the Central Election Commission are elected at meetings of deputies of local councils of deputies of the basic level in each region and deputies of the Minsk City Council of Deputies.
A candidate who receives more than half of the votes of the deputies who took part in the voting is considered elected.
The term of office of a member of the Council of the Republic is five years.
A member of the Council of the Republic exercises his powers in parliament on a professional basis or without interruption from his work (official) activities.
