On the territory of the Brest region, 24 places of growth of Sosnovsky's hogweed remain registered. According to experts, this invasive plant occupies an area of 1.84 hectares in the Baranovichi, Brest and Malorita regions.

“The expansion of Canadian goldenrod deserves special attention. Despite the measures taken, there is an increase in the areas where these plants grow. They fill unused land and deteriorate the quality of the soil. In 2023, 237 new places of growth of Canadian goldenrod were identified over an area of more than 100 hectares. Most of them are on territory of the Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park,” noted the chairman of the Brest Regional Committee of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, Jan Venskovich.

According to him, the low rate of elimination of Canadian goldenrod habitats is due, among other things, to the insufficient use of chemical and combined methods. Mowing this perennial invasive plant has little effect.

“This year, the issue of the presence of hogweed in the Brest region needs to be closed. In areas where Canadian goldenrod grows, it is necessary to use the chemical method of plant removal as much as possible,” emphasized Jan Venskovich.

Chairman of the Brest Regional Executive Committee Yuri Shuleiko instructed the heads of the district executive committees to approach this issue responsibly. The spread of Canadian goldenrod in Belovezhskaya Pushcha is of particular concern. The national park is developing an action plan to combat the invasive plant. They plan to use a chemical method to remove it. This approach has not been used in Pushcha before.

At a meeting of the regional executive committee, a fundamental conversation took place about restoring order on earth. “The issue of protecting nature and establishing order on earth remains a priority. A lot has been done, but there are problems,” said the head of the Brest region. In particular, he drew attention to the problem of unauthorized dumps. Yuri Shuleiko called for tougher punishment for violators who leave trash behind.

The Assistant to the President - Inspector for the Brest Region specifically focused on the rational use of subsoil. There are some shortcomings in this part that need to be corrected.
